From Job Search to Stability: Felix’s Journey with EMBERS

When Felix arrived in Canada from Ghana in 2023, he came as a student pursuing a healthcare assistant program. Like many newcomers, he faced the immediate challenge of finding steady work to support himself while studying. Despite applying to several agencies, securing employment proved difficult.

Everything shifted when he found EMBERS through a Google search and connected with our Surrey office. After a few weeks of waiting, Felix received his first assignment in general labour, a role he continues to work in today. That opportunity became the first step toward building stability in his new life.

Support Beyond Employment

Felix says one of the most meaningful parts of his experience at EMBERS has been the connection he formed with Holly, EMBERS’ Worker Support Program Coordinator. He describes her as kind, responsive, and attentive; someone who always made time to answer his calls or messages.

Through the Worker Support Program, Felix was connected to housing support during a time when he was struggling to keep up with rent. That assistance made an immediate difference.

“Before that help, it was really difficult to save for rent,” he said. “Since then, everything has been moving with me. I really appreciate how smooth and stress-free the process was.”

Looking Ahead

Felix completed his studies at the end of June and is now working toward his goal of starting a career in the healthcare field. His hope is to secure a position in a healthcare centre so he can fulfill his dream of becoming a healthcare assistant - the reason he came to Canada in the first place.

For Felix, work is more than a paycheque. It represents support, dignity, and the chance to move forward even during difficult moments.

He shares deep gratitude for the guidance he received from Holly, who not only helped him secure rent assistance but checked in regularly, offered financial advice, and encouraged him to take on extra shifts when possible.

“EMBERS has shown me that it’s not only about work, but also about the real care you give to your workers’ welfare,” he said. “I am truly grateful to EMBERS for putting a smile back on my face. I will continue to stay with you, work hard every day, and manage my finances responsibly.”
